Iran has intensified efforts to tighten control over the Strait of Hormuz as peace talks with the United States continue without any clear breakthrough.

Tehran recently confirmed the creation of a new body, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), which will oversee transit through the strategically vital waterway. The authority has stated that all navigation within newly defined boundaries must be fully coordinated with Iranian entities, warning that passage without permission will be regarded as illegal.

Iran is also formalising a permit system for vessels seeking access to the Strait. Ships intending to transit are expected to receive guidance by email outlining the rules and regulations for obtaining authorisation. A draft law currently progressing through the Iranian parliament would introduce transit tolls and prohibit vessels linked to the US or Israel from using the route.

The latest developments come as Iran announced a significant expansion of the area surrounding the Strait of Hormuz this week. A newly published map covers approximately 8,800 square miles and extends into the territorial waters of Oman and the UAE, raising concerns among regional neighbours and international shipping operators.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday he had delayed a new military strike following requests from leaders in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, claiming that “serious negotiations are now taking place”.

Meanwhile, commercial shipping through the Strait remains heavily restricted, with movements largely limited to tankers and vessels connected to Iran or operating under agreements with Tehran.

According to industry data, 104 containerships with a combined capacity of 349,912 TEU remain trapped in the Persian Gulf, although ongoing GPS disruption in the region means the exact figure cannot be verified.
