Miami Airfreight Operations Resume Following Cargo Aircraft Accident

Airfreight operations at Miami International Airport have returned broadly to normal following Sunday’s fatal cargo aircraft accident.

An Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-300 freighter, operated by 21 Air, overran a runway while landing after a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft struck vehicles on the ground and caught fire. At least five people lost their lives and a further five were injured.

The accident led to an immediate ground stop while emergency services attended the scene, resulting in widespread delays and cancellations. The ground stop was lifted after approximately three hours, with flights resuming on Sunday evening.

Cargo aircraft were arriving and departing again by Monday morning, with current indications suggesting that operations at this important international freight hub are now running broadly as normal.

Some individual shipments may still experience short-term delays as airlines and handling agents work through the effects of the earlier disruption. Customers with time-sensitive cargo moving through Miami should continue to check the latest position with their freight provider.

The cause of the accident has not yet been established. Investigations are being conducted by the US National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration.

Meanwhile, volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau has disrupted air services in Indonesia, with Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and several other airports temporarily closed.
