Port strikes across Australia have been suspended until the 26th October, following the adjournment, until that date, of a hearing at the Fair Work Commision.
The Port of Sydney, in particular, has been majorly disrupted by a series of strikes and go-slows this year, organised by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA). Issues at the port resulted in Maersk Line suspending their Sydney services in September.
The ports of Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle have also been impacted, and collectively the backlog of containers is now estimated at 100,000 containers. It is expected to take up to three months to clear the arrears, even if there is no further industrial action.
The MUA has come under heavy fire from carriers, logistics businesses, importers and exporters, who fear the severe port congestion will result in lost orders for business, retail shortages, and heavy losses for agricultural exporters.
