Persistent heat and drought are creating growing challenges for European ocean freight movements, with exceptionally low water levels restricting barge operations on both the Rhine and the Danube.
Although commercial shipping continues, vessels on some sections of the Rhine are being forced to reduce their loading capacity substantially. Naturally, barges require sufficient water beneath the hull to navigate safely, meaning lower river levels result in less cargo being carried on each journey. This increases the number of sailings required, reduces available capacity and can add significant cost and delay to supply chains.
The Rhine is one of Europe’s most important inland freight corridors, connecting the major ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp with industrial centres across Germany, France and Switzerland. It supports the movement of containerised goods alongside essential commodities including grain, minerals, ores, coal and petroleum products.
Conditions on the Danube have also deteriorated, with reduced river flow exposing large sandbanks and narrowing navigable channels. In some areas, barges are being delayed while operators wait for sufficient draft to continue their journeys safely.
The disruption comes as widespread congestion is already affecting several European ports, making ocean freight movements through the continent increasingly challenging. Continued hot weather could place further pressure on inland capacity, potentially creating additional bottlenecks between ports, terminals and inland destinations.
As prolonged periods of extreme heat and drought become increasingly common, low-water restrictions could become a more frequent feature of European logistics planning.
Westbound continues to monitor conditions closely, helping customers identify potential disruption and explore the most suitable routing and transport options.
