Two major ocean freight carriers within The Ocean Alliance have now confirmed plans to route selected eastbound services from Europe to Asia through the Suez Canal and Red Sea.
Both CMA CGM and OOCL have confirmed Eastbound journeys recently, which marks the most significant step toward restoring traditional shipping lanes since Houthi attacks forced widespread diversions two years ago.
Although carriers have not yet confirmed use of the shorter route for Asia-to-Europe westbound journeys, the decision to reinstate the eastbound leg alone is already improving efficiency. By shaving a single direction off the Cape of Good Hope detour, round-trip times on these selected journeys are reduced by up to one week.
CMA CGM was the first to “test the waters” last month, sending vessels through the Red Sea for the first time since the conflict escalated. Building on that step, the Ocean Alliance has now committed its NEU4 service from Southampton to return to Asia via the Suez Canal, signalling growing confidence in regional security and navigational feasibility.
The developments come shortly after a significant humanitarian milestone: 11 crew members, held since a July attack that killed four colleagues and sank their vessel, were released by Houthi rebels. The mariners – nationals of India and the Philippines – arrived safely in Oman last week ahead of repatriation.
While many carriers remain cautious and have suggested they have no immediate plans to resume full Red Sea transits, these moves offer a positive indication that Asia-Europe shipping networks may gradually return to normality in the months to come.
As ever, your Westbound team will be following developments closely.
