The European road freight industry is currently experiencing delays due to P&O cancelling ferry services and a truck driver strike in Spain, which may escalate further.

P&O Ferries suspended all of their ferry services from Thursday subject to a major company announcement they were due to give later in the day. That announcement then followed, which confirmed the immediate redundancies of around 800 UK seafaring workers.

P&O themselves have confirmed there will be disruption to services for the next few days, which has already led to congestion and delays at ro-ro ports. It is understood that the company intends to continue their services with agency workers deployed on their vessels.

With P&O operating multiple services in and out of the UK, we expect significant disruption to European services over the coming days.

Further news, which is also disrupting European services, is that many Spanish truck drivers have been on strike since Monday. The indefinite nationwide action is in protest against rising fuel prices and poor working conditions.

Concerns have been mounting that drivers in other European countries will follow suit and there are indications that strikes could follow in both France and Italy in the next few days.
