Following our recent updates regarding developments in the Middle East, the container shipping market is now beginning to see direct pricing responses from ocean carriers.

Several carriers have begun adjusting freight rates and introducing bunker related surcharges in response to rising marine fuel costs and wider network disruption. Although the Strait of Hormuz is not a primary routing lane for most Asia–Europe container services, the region plays a critical role in global energy supply, meaning volatility in oil markets is already translating into higher bunker costs for the shipping industry.

Early market guidance suggests that emergency bunker related surcharges may be introduced by carriers across multiple services, with some indications pointing to potential increases in the region of around $1,000 per TEU, although exact levels and timing remain uncertain as the situation continues to evolve.

Some initial carrier indications suggest that partial adjustments could begin as early as 9th March, with other carriers proposing wider implementation from 16th March. At this stage these timelines remain indicative rather than confirmed, however they demonstrate how quickly the market may begin to react.

Operational Impact

Alongside fuel cost pressures, carriers are also adjusting services across parts of the network. Some services are being re-routed via alternative transhipment hubs while continued security concerns in surrounding regions mean certain vessels are maintaining longer routes via the Cape of Good Hope.

These adjustments can place additional pressure on vessel capacity and may contribute to congestion at key transhipment hubs in both Europe and Asia.

What Customers May See

As the market continues to react, customers may see:

• bunker related surcharges introduced across services

• short term freight rate volatility across the Asia–Europe trade

• potential schedule adjustments as carriers adapt network routing
