Cargo moving through European and Mediterranean ports could face delays on Friday, 30 October, as dockworkers prepare for coordinated strikes and demonstrations across multiple countries.

According to reports, the mobilisation will involve more than 100 ports across 17 countries. However, the scale of disruption will depend on local participation, with some locations holding demonstrations rather than suspending operations.

Italy is a particular area to watch, with a nationwide 24-hour port workers’ strike formally registered. Ports involved include Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Livorno, Trieste, Civitavecchia, Ancona and Ravenna.

Elsewhere, Marseille, Piraeus, Tangier and Mersin are among the ports named in reports. Support has also been reported from dockworkers in Hamburg, Mexico and the United States, although this does not confirm operational stoppages at every location.

The action centres on opposition to military cargo moving through commercial ports. Participating unions have also raised concerns over wages, working conditions and automation.

For UK importers and exporters, potential effects include slower cargo handling, changes to vessel schedules and delays to onward transport. Shipments routed through affected transhipment hubs could also experience knock-on delays, even where their origin or destination ports remain operational.

With arrangements varying between ports, businesses should check individual shipment schedules and allow flexibility around collection and delivery dates. Temporary backlogs could develop where stoppages interrupt normal cargo flows.
