A fire at an electrical substation near London Heathrow has led to the airport being closed overnight causing chaos for flights moving in and out of the world’s fifth busiest airport.
An airport spokesperson has said that the airport will be closed until midnight tonight (March 21st) and passengers have been told not to travel to the airport for outgoing flights.
Fire services were called to the fire in nearby Hayes at 23:23 on Thursday March 20th and the blaze was reportedly under control by 6:30am. However, Heathrow has experienced a major power outage as a result of the substation fire.
More than 1300 flights have been affected by the airport closure and most international flights enroute were diverted to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, although some landed at Frankfurt and Manchester.
Heathrow is far and away the largest hub for air cargo operations in the UK, therefore disruption, backlogs and delays are expected during the next few days on import and export airfreight services.
