Space and equipment availability on ocean freight services from Asia are becoming increasingly constrained as an early peak season begins to take shape.
While global ocean freight markets have shown signs of recovery during 2025, with reported container volumes rising by around 5% through the end of April, demand has accelerated significantly in recent weeks. Industry reports suggest bookings have increased by approximately 10% since early May.
Alongside stronger demand, several factors have contributed to the tightening of available capacity. Carrier blank sailing programmes have reduced space on key trade lanes, while many businesses are understood to have brought forward orders in response to ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
Tensions in the Gulf continue to pose risks to shipping and energy markets, prompting importers to secure stock earlier to mitigate the potential impact of fuel shortages and rising operating costs. At the same time, businesses trading with the US are closely monitoring the upcoming expiry of current tariffs, with the potential for higher duty rates to replace them next month.
As is typically the case during periods of strong demand, freight rates have been moving upwards. Current market indicators suggest these conditions are likely to persist until at least the end of July. By then, the industry should have a clearer picture of whether this surge represents a temporary rush to ship or the start of a particularly strong and extended peak season.
On the Transpacific trade, both Maersk and MSC have recently introduced additional service loops to help accommodate rising volumes.
Westbound continues to monitor developments closely and is working hard to minimise any potential supply chain disruption. However, we encourage importers to plan ahead and book shipments as early as possible to help us secure space as peak season demand continues to build.
