**UPDATE 12th December – A new five-year labour agreement is finally approved and strike appears to be off.
Original Article:
A planned strike by Indian port workers was called off at the last minute back in August, but the prospect of a strike has once more reared its ugly head.
The unions have now confirmed that port workers will stage indefinite work stoppages across government run ports from December 17th, which is in protest at their concerns not being addressed since they agreed to call off the previous strike four months ago.
Should the government fail to revise wages and productivity schemes by December 15th, then an indefinite strike has been promised at state run ports. Twelve of India’s major ports are managed by the government and each is expected to be severely impacted should a strike proceed.
However, workers at privately owned ports, such as Mundra, Kattupalli and Ennore, are not currently expected to walk out, but a strike at state ports will undoubtedly result in major congestion issues across the board.
Of course, there is still hope that the government will resume talks to avoid a strike during the next few days.
