Over 1000 dock workers have been on strike at the Port of Montreal since Monday morning, but government intervention is expected to force a return to work in the next few days.

The majority of the labour force have been out of contract since a dispute in 2018 and tensions have continued to simmer ever since. However, this is the first time that the government have stepped in, putting forward a bill that is expected to pass and end the strike soon.

Montreal is an important gateway for Canada, as well as the US Mid-West and New England region. With US and Canadian logistics already feeling the impact of Covid, Canadian officials felt that the long-term damage to supply chains could be irreparable.

For now, the strike continues and any shipments due to move through the port this week are likely to be severely disrupted.
