Instead, the government has confirmed there will be ‘light-touch regime’ at UK ports, which will be applied whether we leave the EU with a deal or no-deal.

Today’s announcement effectively reverses some of the plans they laid out in February, where they confirmed import controls would be effective from 1st January 2021. Of course, the world is a different place since the outbreak of Covid-19 and avoiding full controls will undoubtedly be welcomed by UK importers.

Unfortunately, there is no update on whether a similar arrangement will be put in place by the EU for goods moving from the UK. At this stage, it looks likely that UK exports will still be subject to full controls.

The UK government are also expected to soon confirm that there will be NO extension of the transition period past December 31st, although the official deadline for this does not expire until the end of this month.
