Shipments from southern China may be subject to significant disruption after Super Typhoon Ragasa struck Guangdong province and the Pearl River Delta this week.
The storm, which brought hurricane-force winds of up to 125 mph, forced temporary closures of Hong Kong and several major Chinese terminals, compounding existing congestion across regional ports.
The timing of the typhoon could not have been more disruptive. China’s Golden Week holiday runs from October 1st to 7th, with factories typically shut down from September 30th.
With many facilities closed during the storm, export orders being rushed out ahead of the holiday may have been delayed and bottlenecks are expected past Golden Week.
Although factories and terminals have begun reopening, recovery efforts are ongoing, and some cargo is likely to remain at origin until after the holiday.
For shippers relying on tight schedules, this disruption may cause knock-on effects for supply chains already impacted by congestion.
