President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to fast-track his appeal of a recent appeals court ruling to strike down the majority of tariffs imposed during his administration.
The request, filed Wednesday, comes just five days after the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7-4 that Trump exceeded his authority in levying broad tariffs against nearly every country.
In his petition, Trump urged the Court to hear arguments as early as November and issue a ruling soon afterward, an accelerated schedule compared to the usual timeline that would usually stretch into next summer.
The appeals court set an October 14 deadline for the tariffs to be overturned, though the Supreme Court is expected to extend that while the case is under review.
The stakes are significant. Should the lower court ruling be upheld, the US government could be forced to refund billions of dollars in tariffs collected since the policy’s launch, threatening Trump’s trade agenda and unraveling international deals linked to the levies.
Trump supporters warn that such an outcome would damage both economic and foreign policy initiatives championed by the president.
The ruling specifically targets the sweeping “Liberation Day” tariffs, which covered multiple countries. It does not affect other duties, such as those imposed on steel and aluminum imports under a separate presidential authority.
