Global shipping is currently facing a complex mix of operational challenges, resulting in delays and disruption across key trade routes.
Shipments from Asia to the UK and Northern Europe are being affected by port congestion, schedule changes, and service adjustments. These factors are creating a more unpredictable transit environment, which requires extra attention to planning and scheduling.
What’s Happening:
Port Congestion:
Congestion continues across Northern European ports, with Antwerp and Bruges experiencing significant delays, further compounded by industrial action and large vessel call sizes. As a result, many shipping lines are diverting vessels to UK ports, increasing pressure on Felixstowe, Southampton, and London Gateway.
Service Disruptions:
Shipping lines have introduced extensive blank sailings (cancelled departures) and service suspensions in an attempt to stabilise freight rates. Much of the capacity from the Trans-Pacific has been redeployed to Asia–Europe and Asia–Mediterranean lanes, adding complexity to global shipping schedules.
Slow Steaming:
Reports indicate that shipping lines are increasingly adopting slow steaming—reducing vessel speeds to better coordinate arrival times with available berths and avoid waiting at anchor. While we have not yet seen official extensions to transit times, this strategy is contributing to consistent delays on shipments from Asia to the UK and Northern Europe.
The Impact:
We are observing regular delays, particularly at Southampton, followed by Felixstowe and then London Gateway. While the extent of delays can vary by sailing and carrier, the trend is clear: transit times are being impacted, even though formal schedules may not yet reflect these changes.
What This Means for You:
The Westbound Team are working closely with shipping lines to manage these challenges and mitigate impact where possible. However, these delays are part of broader global shipping dynamics and remain outside our direct control.
Our Recommendation:
Plan Ahead: We recommend reviewing your supply chain schedules and allowing additional lead time where possible to reduce the risk of disruption.
Early Booking: Booking shipments early provides greater flexibility to secure space and navigate operational challenges.
Stay Informed: We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated on any significant developments.
We thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out directly with any questions or to discuss your shipping requirements in more detail.
