The European Union has formally agreed to delay the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by one year, providing companies with additional time to prepare for its extensive sustainability and traceability obligations.

The regulation, which was originally set to apply to large businesses this month, will now take effect on December 30th 2026. Micro and small enterprises will benefit from a further grace period, with their compliance deadline extended to June 30th 2027. During this additional time, the regulation will remain under review.

Alongside the postponement, the European Commission has announced a simplification review designed to clarify requirements and reduce administrative burden. This move is intended to ease pressure on Food & Beverage and agricultural supply chains that are already managing rising compliance costs while trying to remain competitive in global markets.

What is the EUDR?

The EUDR is a major piece of EU legislation adopted in June 2023 to address global deforestation and forest degradation. Its primary objective is to ensure that certain goods placed on, or exported from, the EU market are not linked to deforestation or ecosystem damage after the year 2020. By doing so, the regulation aims to limit the EU’s role in driving forest loss, while supporting climate goals and protecting biodiversity worldwide.

The scope of the EUDR includes timber and six agricultural commodities: cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber and soy, as well as derived products such as beef, furniture and chocolate. To be sold in or exported from the EU, these products must meet three core requirements:

  1. They are deforestation-free.

  2. They are produced in accordance with applicable laws in the country of origin.

  3. They are supported by a due diligence statement confirming compliance with EUDR rules.

Although the law is already in force, companies are not required to comply until the revised deadlines.
