We reported last week that the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles had introduced a ‘Container Excess Dwell Fee’ to increase fluidity at the terminals.

This week, the Port of Tacoma, on the US Northwest coast, has followed suit and introduced the same practice for their terminals.

We suspect that other West Coast ports, such as Seattle, San Francisco, Oakland, and perhaps even Vancouver, could follow in the coming days or weeks.

The Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach implemented the ‘Container Excess Dwell Fee’ and are now charging a penalty that increments by $100 per container per day, which is being passed on to importers when their containers are delayed.

You can read full details of the implications on our previous article about Los Angeles and Long Beach HERE.
