Fires on cargo ships have become an increasingly serious threat to global supply chains, with recent incidents underscoring the risks faced by vessels, crews, and cargo alike.
Beyond the significant damage caused, such events can result in prolonged disruption, costly salvage operations, and even loss of life. The latest case involves the Danish-flagged Marie Maersk, where a fire was finally brought under control after a week-long battle at sea.
The blaze, first detected as smoke emerged from containers during the vessel’s voyage from Rotterdam to Malaysia, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with ocean freight shipping.
This follows another high-profile incident aboard the container ship Wan Hai 503 in June. Despite successful evacuation of its crew by the Indian Coast Guard, the stricken vessel remains stranded off India’s coast more than two months later, denied entry by both India and Sri Lanka.
Now dubbed “the vessel no one wants,” the case highlights how complex and politically sensitive such emergencies can become once a fire spirals out of control.
