Liverpool dock workers have started their week long strike as the port’s management confirm an upcoming restructure.
The second strike, which follows last month’s two week walk out, started yesterday, despite the recent announcement that Peel Ports have started a restructure due to a drop in its volumes.
The operator starts a redundancy consultation process this week and their spokesperson commented: “We are exploring a number of different options to try and protect as many jobs as possible, including redeploying staff in other areas of the business”.
The shipping industry is witnessing a global downturn in container traffic as the cost of living crisis grips. However, the Unite union believe this action to be a retaliation to the strike.
The union responded to the restructure “It is a cynical attempt to intimidate workers. It will not work. Maybe if they spent more time solving the dispute, as opposed to attacking workers, they’d be in a better place.”
