With a combined wealth of experience in global shipping and supply chain management, they have successfully guided the company through 15 years of growth and innovation, we caught up with Ryan and Danny to ask three questions that reflect their thoughts on the journey so far, (its interesting to see that although they were asked separately their answers have familiar tones).

An interview with Ryan Clark
Ryan Clark, co-founder brings a deep understanding of the complexities of global trade. With a background in logistics and operations, Ryan has been instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of the company. Known for his forward-thinking approach, Ryan focuses on innovation and creating customer-centric solutions that set Westbound Logistics apart from the competition. His leadership has been pivotal in expanding the company’s global footprint, establishing it as a trusted name in the industry.
Q: “What has been the most significant challenge the company has faced in the past 15 years, and how did you overcome it?”
A: I think the biggest challenge is dealing with growth. In the early days I expected cash flow to get easier, but in fact the larger and more successful we have become, we found the same problems remained there were just a few extra zero’s on the end! At least until around the 10 year mark and then, things eventually became a little less stressful.
Q: “Has the original vision for the company evolved since it began, and where do you see the evolution of Westbound over the next 15 years?”
A: To be totally honest, I don’t remember making a plan that was stuck to other than simply ‘lets grow this’! If I went back in time and imagined we would be where we are now, size wise, I’d be really pleased with how far we’ve actually come. If I now think about the next 15 years, then I’d love nothing more to continue that success and add another continent to our global offices, expanding the Westbound family further.
Q: “Can you share a memorable story or milestone from the company’s journey that stands out to you?”
A: If I stop and think about previous stories, there’s actually so many funny memories that stand out, most of which I can’t repeat! The first time we ever visited China and Hong Kong, Danny’s stomach was quite delicate and that’s all I’ll say on that one, but we laugh a lot about it, as well as learning the different cultures of handing out business cards…. you don’t dish them out across a table like a casino croupier in China!
To identify a specific a milestone along the journey, it would have to be 2016, when we opened our first overseas office which was in Shenzhen China. It’s still a very proud moment for me, and now that we have 5 offices in the region with still potential to grow, it’s a continued measurement of how far we’ve come.

An interview with Danny Horne
Danny Horne, co-founder of Westbound Logistics, has a strong expertise in international trade and finance. His career spans over numerous years in the logistics sector, where he has overseen successful projects and initiatives that have driven the company’s growth. Danny’s commitment to operational excellence and efficiency has helped Westbound Logistics maintain its competitive edge, ensuring that clients receive unmatched service. He is passionate about fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth within the company.
Q: “What has been the most significant challenge the company has faced in the past 15 years, and how did you overcome it?”
A: Its so difficult to pin point a specific challenge the company has faced, as there has been so many.
COVID is the obvious pick here; Covid created huge challenges, from general staff well-being to initial worry about whether the company would survive during the incredibly stressful and trying times. It was a proud moment that we didn’t furlough any staff and we all managed to navigate through covid more or less unscathed.
Additionally, Operational growth has always been and will continue to be a huge challenge, as new customers are onboarded its imperative that the staff can continue to service clients at the level we expect. Myself and Ryan set such incredibly high standards, therefore significant growth periods can & will put ridiculous strain and pressure on our amazing staff.
One particular period was the launch of our China to USA Sea freight trade lane (literally an overnight upsurge of unexpected cargo bookings) – all staff were at maximum capacity including myself and we had 3 months setting up and handling all the operational aspects from start to finish. Whilst incredibly hectic at the time, it gave me a valuable insight into the work and effort that goes into every shipment that is handled by our Operational Teams.
Q: “Has the original vision for the company evolved since it began, and where do you see Westbound’s evolution over the next 15 years?”
A: 100%—When Ryan and I set up Westbound, it was all hands on deck. We wore so many hats, from Tea Boy – Operations – Sales – Accounts – Cleaner to Post Boy.
Our 1st employee that came in (Riley, who is still with us 15 years on) immediately took on all these roles and became a truly multi modal plate juggler.
Whilst the company operates incredibly differently these days, I look back very fondly on the 1st few years as was such a crazy fun experience for all.
What does the future hold for Westbound – Id love to see ongoing development and growth in China, more offices opening in China and also in South East Asia.
UK development I would expect ongoing growth on our already strong Sea and EU Road freight trade lanes, but also a significant push to develop and grow Air freight services.
Q: “Can you share a memorable story or milestone from the company’s journey that stands out to you?”
A: The past 15 years have given me so many life long memories, from discovering clay pots to comparisons between Brad Pitt and Rita Ora, however details / contents of these are best not explained 😊
All the awards and nominations have made me so proud, but I would say the 2022 Bifa winner award for Road Freight services is the pinnacle for me.
Starting with virtually zero European Road shipments to vast volume we move now, is testament to Martin Keens amazing achievements but also all the Road Freight staff that have worked tirelessly to develop a truly award winning service…

The Evolution of Global Freight and Logistics: A brief overview of the last 15 years
Over the past 15 years, the global freight and logistics industry has undergone significant transformations, shaped by technological advancements, regulatory changes, and global events. Navigating this evolving landscape has been both challenging and rewarding, presenting numerous obstacles but also creating opportunities for growth and innovation to provide solutions to assist our customers.
Regulatory Changes and Customs Overhauls
The Introduction of the Union Customs Code (UCC): In 2016, the European Union implemented the Union Customs Code (UCC), which aimed to modernise customs processes across the EU, including the UK before Brexit. The UCC introduced new requirements for electronic processing of customs declarations, increased transparency, and tighter security measures. Westbound Logistics had to adapt quickly, investing in new technologies and training to ensure compliance.
Brexit and Its Aftermath: The UK’s decision to leave the European Union in 2016 created significant disruptions in the logistics industry. With the end of the transition period in 2020, new customs checks, tariffs, and regulations were introduced for goods moving between the UK and EU. This led to increased paperwork, delays at borders, and the need to further develop our expertise in customs brokerage and compliance.
The Introduction of Import Control Systems (ICS2): The ICS2, phased in from 2021, required pre-loading and pre-arrival data for all goods entering the EU, including those transiting through the UK. This increased the need for accurate and timely data submissions, introducing further upgrades to our digital capabilities.
Technological Advancements
Digitalisation and Automation: The adoption of digital technologies has revolutionised supply chain management. From automated customs declarations to real-time tracking and inventory management, technology has enabled greater efficiency and transparency in logistics operations. Westbound have invested heavily in these technologies and have an innovative approach to the digital world which is reflected in our tagline ‘digital feel, personalise touch’ we want simple solutions for our customers but know full well that the personal touch in business relationships is always going to be important .
Big Data and Predictive Analytics: The use of big data and predictive analytics allows companies to optimise their supply chains, anticipate disruptions, and improve decision-making. These tools have become essential for managing complex global networks, reducing costs, and enhancing customer service, our Westbound Hub system does this through captive data analysis, allowing our clients to see real information and act upon it, in addition to this we keep our customers updated on industry changes via our newsletters .
Sustainability Initiatives: The past decade has seen a growing emphasis on sustainability in logistics. Westbound have increasingly adopted greener practices, such as using electric vehicles and implementing energy-efficient warehousing solutions.
Global Disruptors
The Global Financial Crisis (2007-2008): The financial crisis led to a significant downturn in global trade, affecting the logistics industry as volumes dropped and shipping rates plummeted. However, the crisis also led to a greater focus on cost efficiency and supply chain resilience, laying the groundwork for future growth.
The COVID-19 Pandemic: Perhaps the most significant disruptor of recent times, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges to the logistics industry. Border closures, lockdowns, and reduced workforce availability led to severe disruptions in global supply chains. Westbound had to navigate container shortages, port congestion, and fluctuating demand, all while ensuring the safety of our employees. The pandemic also accelerated the shift towards e-commerce, with Westbound playing a crucial role in supporting our clients during the surge in online shopping.
The Rise of Geopolitical Tensions: Over the past decade, geopolitical tensions, such as the US-China trade war and ongoing sanctions, have added layers of complexity to global logistics. Westbound have had to remain agile, adapting to new trade routes, tariffs, and regulatory requirements while managing the risks associated with these tensions.
Opportunities Amidst Challenges
Despite these obstacles, the past 15 years have also presented significant opportunities:
E-commerce Boom: The exponential growth of e-commerce has been a major driver of demand for our logistics services. We have expanded our capabilities in last-mile delivery, warehousing, and fulfilment services, catering to the needs of online retailers and consumers.
Globalisation and Market Expansion: The ongoing globalisation of trade has opened up new markets. By establishing a presence in key regions such as Asia, and North America and Europe, Westbound have been able to diversify our revenue streams and reduce reliance on traditional trade routes.
Innovation in Supply Chain Management: The challenges of the past 15 years have spurred innovation in supply chain management. Westbound have embraced new technologies and developed our own bespoke solutions, as we look to the future we are reviewing how AI-driven logistics platforms can enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
Looking back at the last 15 years it’s been a period of profound change for the global freight and logistics industry. From navigating complex regulatory environments and adapting to technological advancements, to overcoming global disruptors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Westbound Logistics Services Ltd have demonstrated resilience and adaptability and we thank our dedicated teams for all of their hard work during this time. As we look to the future, the lessons learned and opportunities seized during this period will continue to shape the industry and drive further growth and innovation.
