Restitution issues are impacting some carriers at the port of Felixstowe right now, as both Maersk and Evergreen have advised they cannot accept their empty containers back at port.

Port congestion, caused by the driver shortage and the sheer volume of containers sitting at port awaiting transport, are believed to be the cause.

Both lines have offered alternative restitution points, which for the South are either London Gateway or Tilbury. This effectively means there is an extra ‘leg’ to the majority of container deliveries for these two carriers. Inevitably, additional transport costs are being incurred.

Maersk’s advisory notice suggests they are working with the port to be able to open again soon.
