A container explosion at Ningbo Zhoushan Port has led to the terminal being closed and fears of upcoming delays from the Zhejiang Province port.
Operations at Terminal 3 have been suspended after the explosion aboard the Yang Ming Mobility containership, which was docked in the container terminal Thursday afternoon.
Immediately following the powerful blast, vast plumes of flames and smoke could be seen in the port and emergency response teams were mobilised to fight the fire. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported since the incident.
According to Chinese news outlets, the cause may have been down to class 5.2 organic peroxide, which is a reactive chemical that is highly combustible and causes heat to rise as outside temperature increases.
Ongoing delays can now be expected at the port following the closure. Schedules for upcoming vessels are already being adjusted, which could lead to longer term delays and port congestion.
